Zelio E-Mobility Expands EV Manufacturing Capacity with New Production Facility in Tamil Nadu

July 17, 2026

news

In July 2026, Zelio E-Mobility inaugurated a new EV production facility in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The plant spans approximately 39,000 sq. ft. on Trichy Road, Nagiyyaan Thottam, Lakshmi Nagar Kannampalayam, Coimbatore. It has been established with a capital investment of up to INR 1 crore, funded entirely through internal accruals.

The facility adds 60,000 units of annual production capacity, taking Zelio's total installed manufacturing capacity from 1,80,000 to 2,40,000 units per annum, a 33% expansion. It will initially manufacture and assemble 24,000 to 30,000 electric two-wheelers annually, with production scaling in line with market demand.

The plant will serve southern markets: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and South Maharashtra. This is Zelio's fourth EV manufacturing plant in India, joining its existing facilities in Ladwa and Patan in Haryana and Cuttack in Odisha.

Why Zelio Chose Coimbatore and What It Says About Tamil Nadu's EV Momentum

Coimbatore is not an accidental choice. Tamil Nadu accounts for approximately 40% of India's total EV production and 70% of electric two-wheeler manufacturing nationally. Coimbatore specifically is one of Tamil Nadu's most established industrial cities, home to a dense ecosystem of precision engineering, textiles machinery, and auto component manufacturers.

The city's existing manufacturing culture, availability of skilled workers, and connectivity to South Indian markets through road and rail networks make it a natural location for an electric vehicle manufacturing expansion targeting southern India.

Tamil Nadu's state government has actively cultivated its Tamil Nadu EV hub identity through tax exemptions, land allocation in SIPCOT parks, and single-window approvals for EV investments. The state's target of attracting INR 50,000 crore in EV investments by 2025 has been substantially achieved. VinFast opened its plant in Thoothukudi in August 2025.

Ola Electric operates its Futurefactory and Gigafactory in Krishnagiri. TVS Motor Company is scaling from Hosur. Ather Energy is Bengaluru-based but deeply embedded in Tamil Nadu's component supply chain. Zelio entering Coimbatore is the latest addition to a southern EV manufacturing cluster that is now one of the most active in Asia.

Zelio's Business Case: What the Financial Numbers Show

The Coimbatore expansion is grounded in a financially sound business case. Zelio E-Mobility reported revenue of INR 313.68 crore in FY 2025-26, an 81.8% year-on-year increase. The company has been profitable since inception.

It listed on the BSE SME platform in October 2025, raising INR 78.34 crore at a listing premium of 13.9% on IPO day. Its revenue CAGR over the last four years is 121%, placing it among the fastest-growing EV two-wheeler companies in India by revenue trajectory.

The decision to fund the Coimbatore plant entirely from internal accruals, rather than raising fresh capital, reflects a deliberate approach to capital discipline. INR 1 crore for a 60,000-unit annual capacity assembly and logistics facility is a lean investment.

It reflects Zelio's strategy of establishing regional manufacturing and distribution hubs at low fixed-cost entry points, then scaling production organically as demand grows in each geography. The plant will start with 30 direct workers and plans to add over 100 personnel as volumes increase over the next 12 to 24 months.

Zelio's dealer network currently spans over 400 outlets across 25+ states, with plans to scale to 550+ dealerships by FY27. The Coimbatore facility will improve delivery timelines to southern dealers, reduce logistics costs compared to shipping from Haryana or Odisha, and enable faster after-sales support through improved parts availability. This supply chain efficiency argument, not just production capacity, is a key part of how Zelio justifies regional manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu investment.

What This Pattern Reflects About EV Manufacturing Expansion in India

Zelio's Coimbatore plant is a micro-case study in a broader manufacturing expansion in India story that is playing out across India's EV two-wheeler sector. The market is no longer driven only by a few large manufacturers with single mega-factories. It is increasingly being built by a second tier of companies, smaller, faster-growing, capital-efficient, who are establishing multiple regional production hubs rather than betting everything on one large greenfield manufacturing project.

This distributed manufacturing strategy has clear commercial logic. It brings production closer to growing regional markets, reduces logistics costs, improves after-sales support, and creates local employment that strengthens dealer and community relationships. It also reduces the risk concentration of having all production capacity in a single location, something that the post-COVID supply chain experience and India's regional weather events have made manufacturers acutely conscious of.

For India's EV supply chain, this distributed factory model creates a different set of infrastructure demands than large greenfield campuses do. It requires rapid factory setup in India capabilities, the ability to assess a site, design a basic assembly layout, get factory licence and fire NOC approvals, install equipment, and commence production in a short timeline.

The capital investment is modest. The regulatory and engineering requirements are real. And the speed of setup relative to the business timeline often determines whether the regional market opportunity is captured or conceded to a competitor who moves faster.

The broader EV market context reinforces why manufacturers like Zelio are expanding. FY2026 saw 1.4 million electric two-wheelers sold, a 22% increase. Delhi's EV Policy 2.0, notified on July 1, bans new petrol two-wheeler registrations from April 2028. The PM E-DRIVE scheme's INR 503.86 crore charger expansion and the June 2026 Haryana building code mandate for EV charging infrastructure in all new buildings are all strengthening the demand floor. Zelio's Coimbatore plant is not just a response to current demand. It is a bet on where southern India's EV two-wheeler market will be in 2028.

Zelio opened its fourth factory in four years with INR 1 crore and internal accruals. It is now producing EVs in four states. That is what lean, distributed manufacturing expansion looks like in India's electric mobility era.

IMARC Engineering's Perspective

Zelio's Coimbatore plant reflects a pattern we see across India's EV manufacturing expansion: growing companies prioritising proximity to their customers over concentration of production at a single hub. From an engineering and project management perspective, this distributed factory strategy creates specific challenges. Each new facility, however compact, requires its own regulatory approvals, utility connections, production line design, quality management integration, and workforce training.

A 39,000 sq. ft. assembly plant is not a large capital project, but it is a real industrial project that must be delivered on time and to specification for the business case to hold. IMARC Engineering supports EV manufacturers throughout the industrial project lifecycle from feasibility studies and site selection to plant layout, utility planning, regulatory approvals, commissioning, and operational readiness.

Whether the project is an INR 1 crore brownfield assembly expansion or an INR 500 crore greenfield manufacturing project, the engineering discipline required is the same: get the site, the processes, and the compliance right before production starts. As India's EV two-wheeler market continues to grow and manufacturing expansion in India distributes across more states, the demand for capable plant engineering and project management support will only increase.
